Our Story

Mountain District Poultry Society Inc. is a group of poultry enthusiasts made up of Stud Breeders of pure bred poultry, and people who keep poultry for their enjoyment and products. Mountain District Poultry Society Inc. was formed by leading poultry exhibitors early in 1966 after the demise of the N.U.P.B.A. (National Utility Poultry Breeders Association).

The meetings were held at Fallon’s poultry farm off Bayfield Road, Bayswater. Fallon’s farm was sold in early 1967 and the club moved to new premises in North Ringwood. These premises were sold for subdivision in 1968. We then moved to a church in Kilsyth, which was subsequently sold. We had to look for a new building, and luckily McCracken house at Lilydale Showgrounds was available. This proved to be too small due to new members joining. Luck was on our side, as a previous president of the club was involved with Yarra Glen A&H Society as the poultry steward. This pavilion proved to suit our needs but there was a slight problem, the Agricultural Society stored their equipment in what was our kitchen and dining area. In the late 1980’s the Agricultural Society extended the pavilion with an extra bay. This allowed us to have our shows in the pavilion. Before this, we held our shows at the Dandenong poultry pavilion which was very time consuming as we had to set up all the pens and pull them down afterwards.

At Yarra Glen we were able to set up our show pens and leave them there permanently. In the late 1980’s we were fortunate enough to secure a Government grant through the Department of Agriculture. Our present show cages are the result of this grant. Then in 2007 we purchased and installed new front for all of our Bantam pens.

In late 2008-early 2009 we purchased and installed new fronts for all of our large pens. Also in late 2009-early 2010 we have begun the task of upgrading our kitchen and meeting room facilities to make these more comfortable and useable for all of our members and exhibitors.
